Better Living for Texans celebrates it’s 20 year anniversary on October 1st, 2015!
Better Living for Texans is a statewide nutrition education program for adults and kids who want to learn how to eat well and save money. You can make friends and have fun while you learn about eating healthy foods and saving money! For the past 2 decades, our agency has made a tremendous impact reaching low-income audiences to help improve their food security, diet quality, nutrition knowledge, and food safety skills.
Why do we need the BLT Program?
- As of June 2015, 3,776,523 people residing in Texas were receiving SNAP benefits. This represents 14% of the population (or 1 out of every 7 people). Also, it has been estimated that only about 55 to 60% of people eligible for SNAP actually receive benefits so the 14% figure is pretty conservative.
- 1 in 6 Texas households face food insecurity and hunger.
- Vegetable and fruit intake continues to fall well below current recommendations.
- A majority of children and adults fail to meet minimum recommendations for physical activity.
All of these factors play a strong role in the risk and prevalence of chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer. Studies show that underserved audiences are often diagnosed with chronic diseases later in the disease stage, making treatment more difficult and more costly.
By participating in BLT programs, you can learn how to:
- choose foods that are inexpensive and good to eat
- make your food dollars last longer
- make sure you and your family get enough to eat
- use food labels to choose good foods at the grocery store
- fix meals that will keep your family healthy
- make your favorite food with less fat and sugar
- help your children learn how to eat healthy snacks they will like
- share useful information with your family and friends (for example, you can learn about unit pricing to help stretch your food dollars, or how to read labels to make healthier meal choices, or even how to keep pests out of your pantry!)
